How to Crate Train Your Dog for Long-Haul Flights

PUBLISHED JAN 2025 • 7 MIN READ

Step-by-step positive conditioning routines to make your pet's IATA flight crate their safest personal haven before takeoff.

Start Weeks, Not Days, Before Travel

Introduce the crate as a calm, positive space at least 3-4 weeks ahead of departure, well before the stress of a real travel day.

Make the Crate a Reward Zone

Feed meals inside the crate, add a worn item of your clothing for scent, and reward calm entry and exit with treats and praise.

Build Up Duration Gradually

Start with the door open for short periods, then closed for a few minutes, working up to a few hours so your pet is comfortable resting inside undisturbed.

Simulate Travel Conditions

Practice moving the crate, place it in the car for short drives, and get your pet used to ambient engine and road noise.

On Departure Day

Skip a heavy meal a few hours before the flight, offer a short walk, and keep your own energy calm — pets pick up on handler stress.
